What to wear on the pre-shoot…

One of the most common questions I get asked is what to wear on the pre-shoot and it’s not that easy to give a one-size-fitts-all answer to the question.  I’m certainly not a fashionista and I’m definitely not a fashion icon (ask my kids) but I can give you a few pointers that hopefully will help to produce some good pictures.  You want to look casual and not too formal, while wearing something that is very much “you”.  You’ve probably seen enough beach shots by now to know that blue jeans and white T shirts can look pretty cool.  This certainly isn’t your only option and in fact there are probably so many choices that it will be easier to list the things you shouldn’t wear rather than the items you should.  Avoid clothing with slogans or large logos on them.  So guys, leave the football shirts at home and wear something a little more flattering – most noisy stripes and loud colours and patterns are just too risky, and are best avoided.  Wearing clothes that match your partner’s (say, khaki and white) usually does not look good, but it is important to stick to the same colour family and bear in mind that darker colours are most slimming on women while lighter colours can have the opposite effect.  Please bear in mind that if you decide to use me as your photographer you will not be sitting still for very long.  We’ll be moving around quite a lot – walking, jumping, pulling, pushing, high-fiveing etc. – so ensure that what you wear will be comfortable.  Another a final point worth mentioning is that it’s important to incorporate the same level of formality into your outfits – meaning that one person should not look as if they’re going to the beach and the other to a board meeting.
